2009 03-30 This little guy was bouncing in and out of the branches, but paused and posed. I wandered around the Renton Riparian area for an hour today, watched the herons coming & going (always outside the range & light for a decent shot), and the hawk circling overhead (way too far away for a shot). For my efforts, I ended up with one good shot of a bushtit. Sorry, that's the only name I've seen for it :-D

2009 04-23 This one combines my two new favorite techniques - motion blur and a black & white mask with the color cut-out for the rider. And, of a bike race to boot. This week I was able to hang on until the finish of the race, although it seemed like they were taking it pretty easy going up the hill.

All the motion blur was done in camera using shutter priority. I've found that somewhere around 1/40-1/50 will give me a bit of a blur, but still pretty good odds of getting something to turn out if I take a series of one rider passing by.

Updates - Thanks for all the comments! The shot was taken by panning along with the rider at a shutter speed of 1/40 in shutter priority. Panning with the rider will blur the background, and if the pan is perfectly in sync with the passing rider, the rider is in focus. Success rate seems to be about 1 in 5-7 for this shutter speed. I usually put this on continuous-high for the shot selection, and take as many as possible as the chosen rider passes by (usually 5-7 shots). I didn't realize there was photoshop trick for doing it, and I always prefer to do things for real when possible. The only photoshopping is the selective coloring. 2009 04-30 Thursday means bike race day. Unfortunately, I feel pretty crummy, so no race for me. I still wanted to work on getting more of the riders this time, with a bit less focus on my own team. I was trying lots of motion blur (panning with camera). I thought this one was kind of neat because there are so many things happening. There are guys going left, guys going right, and guys headed straight on. I was panning slighty right, which put the guys in the middle in focus.

Lots more of these to follow when I feel better, and have a few more hours to process them all.

2009 08-08 "Extra Close Up!" I took my nephew birding this morning. Unfortunately, there weren't too many birds for him to see, but we managed a heron, a couple bald eagles, a cooper's hawk, a family of osprey and lots of "little birds" as he put it (swallows, sparrows, blackbirds). The best line of the day was "Can we find a herd of those eagles?". We found ripe blackberries at the osprey spot and he was in heaven!

This was a great week for photography. I've shot interesting subjects all week (hydros, blue angels, soccer game, super cute kids!), and the new camera/lens setup is amazing. This was shot with the new 14-24 f/2.8. It's amazing how wide this thing is, and how close I needed to be to pull this shot off. I was making him laugh by moving backward and forward for his 'extra close up'. Silly smile and goldfish were the outcome.

I made this one selectively colored because I thought it further emphasized Nolan's expression. I did this by selecting everything around him and turning it black & white. I did nothing with the curvature however. This is exactly as shot, with a black & white backdrop.

2009 04-20 Today my wife and I went for a walk in Lincoln Park here in lovely West Seattle. I know there's a resident owl, so I brought along the big lens. My shoulders hurt from lugging it around from dawn til dusk yesterday in search of birds all over the state. Anyway; no owl, but an eagle who was enjoying the sun. This is a pretty big crop, but it stayed pretty clear. He was at the top of a tall evergreen, and in no hurry to leave.

2009 04-07 Today I was all set to race, but when I began to warm up, my seat made a popping sound. Not good. I checked it out, and rode a bit further until it did it again. Very not good. I got off, wiggled it a bit, and the entire thing popped right off the seat post. So, needless to say, no racing for me. On the other hand, because the race is a short circuit with three groups running at once, I was able to try some different things. This one is a long exposure of one of my teammates (Dustin) taking a drink. These are really tough to get right, and I racked up 20-30 pictures and this was the only one that came out with the effect I was shooting for. I PS'd up some contrast and lowered the saturation.

Update: I’m a bit of an aperature priority junkie. I find that it’s the easiest way to get my pictures to come out how I plan. In this case, shutter priority would’ve been fine. For aperature priority, I pointed my camera in the vicinity of the picture, and used the metering in the viewfinder to find a shutter speed I was looking for by changing the aperature. I had to turn off ISO auto, but didn’t remember to drop my ISO back to 200 or 100.

2009 04-26 Today I headed up to the Skagit with my wife and her friend from work. What an awesome day to be out taking pictures. Beautiful sun and great company were the story of the day. The tulips have finally arrived! We spent a good portion of the day looking for birds, and the rest here with the tulips. Lots of eagles, a few harriers, and lots of ducks on the other sides of fields was our luck for birding. I couldn't help myself, but put up a couple of the eagle pictures as well...

I played with the levels a little here to get the most out of the sky. Not much required when it's this beautiful out though!

2009 04-10 It was a bit icky out this morning, and I didn't get to go to Renton to check on the hawks & herons. This was actually a blessing in disguise, as I was able to sleep in a bit longer, and needed it! Anyway, after work, I played with the dogs for a bit. This shot is of my parents' dog Molly. Ours wont chase balls, so it's tough to get any action shots of them.

I spruced it up in PS by turning the whole thing B&W using a new layer, then erasing the portion of the layer that was over the ball. I really like this effect. I've used it for some of the kid pictures, and have seen some really cool wedding photos by others that have utilized this effect.

2009 03-31 Tuesday is turning out to be the toughest for photos now that bike racing season has begun. I take off for work before there's sufficient light, come home at lunch to free my dogs, then head off for the races in the evening; returning well after dark. All of the races happen at the same time, so no chance of any decent race shots. Anyway, I got 6th out of 50 tonight, which is pretty ok since I felt horrible most of the race, only to rally at the end. This is the front chainring of my racing bike. Macro is fun! Photoshopped the levels a bit because, even using the flash f/10 doesn't provide quite enough light for proper exposure.

2009 05-05 Another Tuesday, another race. Unfortunately, pictures of races on Tuesdays mean that I wasn't in the race. I managed to tear a spoke from my hub, and called it a night about 1/2 way through. The course wasn't one that suited my skills all that well anyway (big dudes need flat finishes, not uphill!). Last time my bike broke, I was without my 70-200 f/2.8 which I love so much for bike races, and I vowed that I'd carry it with me every week so I didn't miss any more race shots.

I played with this one quite a bit in Photoshop, trying to accentuate the emotion and apparent pain...and this one was on the 'easy' part of the course!

2009 04-06 I woke up early this morning and headed to the park in Renton. I had heard the birds were more active in the morning; and were they ever! The herons were all over the place making their nests, and the cooper's hawks have returned and were out and about enjoying the morning sun. This pretty gal let us get about 30 yards from her before heading back to tend her nest. Just a crop in photoshop. I debated lowering saturation and adding more blue, but this is a more accurate rendition of the way the sun was being reflected at sunrise.

2009 08-10 Since I worked for hours & hours on these, I thought it appropriate to post a second one that I thought interesting. A little different twist on my normal motion blur by changing it to B&W.

2009 08-06 D700 came today! Woohoo! I thought bike racing, and kid pics in the dark would be good first challenges for putting it through it’s paces. This shot doesn’t really show much different than the D300, but in the evening, we had a party for my bro-in-law for landing a new job. Everyone brought their kids, and with dwindling light, I was shooting at ISO 2000 and higher with no dropoff whatsoever. Today might be a double day, but with the Smugmug difficulty, #2 might come later on (one of the kid ones at amazing ISO’s).

This is an old-school panning shot. Shutter priority, 1/50s. Effect is created by panning the camera with the riders as they whiz by.

2009 03-25 Today it's looking more official. This time around we have a "dot with a flicker" as the doc put it. The pinkish spot here is our "dot". Hopefully, everything will go as planned and I'll have more of these to post in the near future!

2009 05-03 Hawk tongue? I never really noticed (or had enough resolution to see), but it appears that this hawk has a tongue. Very odd looking. Through a little research and some other photographer's work at this area, I was able to figure out where this guy likes to hang out. I'd just made my way when low & behold; here it came! It landed right above me and chowed down some lunch. This is a catch during the cleaup work following.

2009 10-24 I went looking for some birds (cooper's hawks specifically) this morning and didn't have any luck whatsoever. I've been told they are at a particular spot every day, but no luck for me today.

To make up for it though, I was able to get some great shots (IMHO) of my nephew's soccer game. This is one of our friend's kids - Kaelin (sp?). Everyone was feeling good after an early goal despite not keeping score.

2009 06-29 Another green heron! These guys are very elusive, and don't usually get anywhere near me. This was a clear shot, so I was able to crop significantly without losing too much quality. I tried to get closer, but managed to scare this one off. There actually were two and I didn't realize it until they flew away. I'm afraid I was a bad 'birder' today.

2009 05-26 Today was a busy day at work, followed by a run to the bike race. Therefore, this one is another of my favorites from the weekend photo binge.

It was taken in color, but I had this look in mind and was able to execute it in photoshop/lightroom.

2009 06-23 My wife asked me to pick up some cupcakes for her coworkers to munch on tomorrow. They put the cute little cupcakes into egg containers. I couldn't resist trying to make something interesting out of all the colors and textures.

2009 05-25 Nolan with his first slip & slide. He had a blast, and played on this thing almost all afternoon. The first few times were pure joy, as I was aiming to capture here.

I’ve been away shooting/road tripping all weekend, so please have a look at my past couple dailies, that were all posted today. I’d love to hear what you think.

2009 10-09 Nolan and Claire came over for the evening. They're still my favorite subjects =). Both have gotten used to the camera, and are pretty used to me snapping away. The little one just discovered the LCD playback tonight and insisted on seing a few of the ones of her. She's really adorable.

I took parts of what I liked of the original shot and expanded on them with PS. This was shot at f/2 which already gave me some pretty good bokeh. I accentuated a bit, softening the outline of her hair while keeping the eye in focus. I also did some color correction and bumped up the contrast a bit.

2009 04-08 I dropped by a park off the Duwamish River on my way home today. I was hoping to catch the osprey doing their thing, but no one was home at any of the nests, and I didn't see them working the river. I wandered around and got some good tweety bird pics, but this one was the toughest, took the most patience, and I only saw one all day. This little guy (I believe it's a yellow-rumped warbler...thoughts?) was dead set on his yellow tree, but wanted to stay as far away from me as possible. Eventually, it came around to my side of the tree long enough for me to get a few good shots. Just a crop (a fairly substantial one)in photoshop.

One of the comments on this photo made me realize that I’ve never seen lots & lots of birds that are fairly common. I recently picked up a Nikon 200-400 f/4: it’s amazing, and is changing how I view the world! Now if only they made a pocket-size version instead of bazooka-size! It’s tough not to get noticed hauling it around.

2009 11-02 I ended up iwth a bit of time today to wander around on my lunch hour near my old work. The street performers at Pike Place market are always interesting photographic subjects.

I've always loved the market in the winter time. Way less people than the summer, but all the same fare. I took a ton of pictures, but all in search of that one magical 'photo of the day'.

I've been considering using a crazy filter in PS for a bit, and really thought this one lended itself to some treatment beyond the normal contrast and exposure adjustments. The effect was created with the 'fresco' filter. I then added contrast to make all the blacks as black as possible without totally losing the face.

2009 10-25 I got another opportunity to head up to the Skagit today to shoot the incoming birds. So far, it looks like the peregrines are out in force, and there are plenty of red tails, kestrels, and eagles around too. The rough-legged hawks and owls aren't back yet.

This is a collage of a couple of the peregrine falcons we saw today. The pictures surrounding the main picture were a fight that we observed between two falcons. Not sure why, but it was pretty vicious. If only the light had been a bit better, these would've been some absolutely stunning pictures! (our motto of the day...). It will need to be viewed as big as possible to see any of what's going on in the surrounding shots.
